- The Hunger Game Trilogy by Suzanne Collins -- With the Prequel novel, titled The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, coming out in just a few short months this is the perfect time to jump back into everyone’s favorite middle-school book series!
- Lock Every Door by Riley Sager -- This dark, gothic, thriller is set in a mysterious New York hotel where a young woman who is in need of some quick cash agrees to apartment sit for one of the residents. The hotel has some weird rules though and when one of her fellow apartment sitters goes missing, Jules sets out to uncover the mystery of what is happening. I also highly recommend checking out Riley Sager’s other two novels, Final Girls and The Last Time I Lied, his writing is superb! (These books are thriller/horror so be aware of that before diving in!)
- Red Rising by Pierce Brown -- A fun, science fiction novel that is set on Mars, it has been described as the adult version of The Hunger Games. I think I would agree but the world that Brown builds is fantastic and fascinating. If you are looking to get into adult science fiction this one is great to start with! (Many adult themes present and can be triggering some people!)
- I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara -- My favorite book of 2019, I loved it!. This is nonfiction and being upfront it is the story of the Golden State Killer. The book was written and released before his capture and unfortunately the author passed away before either of those things could be completed. It is dark and there are graphic scenes present but the story is enthralling. If you feel mentally strong enough to handle the dark subject matter I highly recommend this one!
- The Relationship Cure by John Gottman -- Another nonfiction title, this one is all about how and way relationships either succeed or fall apart. My favorite part of this one is that Gottman offers exercises for anyone reading this to try themselves. It's not the best or most exciting read but can be insightful if you take your time with it!
- Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz -- This great YA book I read all in one day. It follows the relationship growth of Aristotle and Dante as teenagers in the 1980s. Personally my favorite part was the family relationship dynamics between Aristotle and his parents and brother. This is also a diverse read as Aristolte is a non-white main character and the book features queer characters! (We love diversity in fiction!)
- The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid -- Another diverse read, The Seven Husbands takes you on the tale of Evelyen Hugo, an old Hollywood star but is just as famous for her seven marriages as she is for her films. The story shows her humble beginnings from Cuba all the way to her being one of Hollywood's biggest stars. The story is beautiful and will leave you enthralled by Evelyen and her story. I highly recommend checking this one out as an audiobook! (Be aware this book does have domestic abuse portrayed on page!)
- Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant -- This horror story follows a research vessel that travels to the Mariana Trench after a sensational video of “mermaids” sweeps the country. If you want a high action, edge of your seat book with some good creepy scenes and engaging mystery. This is a fantastic choice. I personally would love to see this as a movie as long as it is done right!
Please make sure to evaluate your own mental health before diving into any reading! Some of the recommended books contain sensitive content, so make sure you choose one that keeps you in a healthy headspace.
If you need free access to any of these, be sure to check your local library online catalog or download apps that are compatible with your library card to get the E-Book or Audiobook versions! Some good apps that I personally use are OverDrive, Libby, and Hoopla.
You can also sign up for a free 30 day trial of Scribd! Another app that has thousands of E-Book and Audiobooks to read or listen to. They have everything from the most popular new releases to the most obscure books out in the world!
